sexism? consumerism? oversimplification?

This article in the fashion and style section of the times presented something I had to think about for a few minutes.

It makes some sense (we're all spending less these days) but I wonder if it has anything to do with that point. I see this makes good sense when you compare to other "theories of economics", but to even make an article about this and encouraging this makes me wonder, is someone out there trying to drum up sales, and simultaneously saying women, when faced with economic hardship... go out and buy lipstick instead. its not that dissimilar to the shit guys buy as impulse buys, but it kinda feels like an oversimplification of the female mind in a way to get cosmetics sales up (cosmetics aren't exactly a staple item, I must note).
