I'm staying cheery today...

The Momeno Mori is a reminder of death. I first came across the word in an art history class, and this is a prevailant theme in much of western art, as are the many images and embodiments of death in art globally, and through out prehistory, antiquity to the present day.

Momento Mori in art are often the old "skull placed on a desk" or else, a death's head and an hourglass, maybe a sign of life included in there to lay it on rather heavy. However, mourning through out history and various cultures is an amazing study which can bring us closer to examining our own feelings about that which awaits us all.

In my travels to find odd and unusual things from the past, I've come across several types of death mementos that seem prevalent through western culture. One of the more recent developments was the death portrait in photographs. click the image for a link. I'll be posting some more entries later on some of the other more interesting things I've come across in my travels. BE WARNED: the photos, which not grotesque, are very creepy. theyre dead people, after all...1get_van_gogh_1885-86_skull_of_skeleton_with_burning_cigarette_400x525.shkl.jpgStay spooky!
